Gizmodo Scoop Feels Dirty, but Home Search Crossed Line

News Analysis: Although Gizmodo editor Jason Chen may not have done the most ethical thing by paying $5,000 for an AWOL prototype of the next iPhone, the California task force that forced open his door in apparent violation of the terms of its search warrant (to say nothing of state law) just turned his case into a test of journalistic freedoms. - Legend has it that one of the first things taught in journalism school is
that an honest journalist never pays for a story. I suppose that's true, but
you see, I never went to j-school. Does that let me off the hook?

Gold To Go ATMs dispense precious metals to the superwealthy, heading to the states this year

Goldline might be a bust (sorry, Glenn), but you're not gonna let that stop you from preparing for the imminent collapse of society. Or maybe you just want to hang with your friends at the Ayn Rand Book Club (The Fountainhead again?) and they prefer Krugerrands to the fiat currency of the USA. Any way you slice it, Americans (including our friend Scott) have "gold fever." Luckily, it turns out that the Gold To Go vending machines we saw early this year are on their way to the states. Stocked with up to ten different gold bars or coins, these bad boys accept cash or plastic and use a VPN to phone home to Germany for updates on the cost of precious metals every 10 minutes. They also feature an ID scanner / camera combo for preventing (or at least slowing down) potential money launderers. The devices can be found currently in the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi, Bankshop in Reutlingen, Germany, The Westin Palace in Madrid, and the Orio al Serio International Airport, and they'll be hitting Las Vegas and Florida sometime this year. There might also be one next to the Coinstar machine at the Murray Ave. Giant Eagle (we'll check it out and let you know).Gold To Go ATMs dispense precious metals to the superwealthy, heading to the states this year originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 15:39:00 EDT. iControlPad to use Bluetooth instead of dock connector

It's supposedly already headed into production, but it looks like the iControlPad is still undergoing a few last minute changes. The group behind the iPhone game controller peripheral has just announced that the device will actually use Bluetooth instead of an Apple dock connector -- a change that's apparently being done in part due to Apple's recent litigation with Hypermac, and to avoid any actual licensing issues. As you might expect from such a small project, that's also put the team in something of a bind, and they're now looking for help from folks experienced with using Bluetooth in iOS. Of course, while the device is being pitched as an iPhone peripheral to start, there's also been support for other phones promised, and it's now been officially confirmed that those other phones will include Android phones with Bluetooth.iControlPad to use Bluetooth instead of dock connector originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 15:51:00 EDT. Sony updates VAIO F, E, and L with shiny new silicon, a pinch of Blu-ray and some denser screens

Fall is fully upon us and winter around the bend, which can only mean one thing -- time for Sony to refresh its alphabet soup of Vaio laptops with some seasonal upgrades. First and foremost, the 16.4-inch VAIO F is getting a kick in the graphical department -- just as expected, you can grab a GeForce GT 425M 1GB for a nominal $50 fee -- and there's a pair of standard-issue USB 3.0 ports to power some potent peripherals. The Vaio L touchscreen all-in-one, meanwhile, is getting a Blu-ray burner at the $2,199 level, and both the VAIO EA and VAIO EB have access to 2.53GHz Core i5-460M and 2.66GHz Core i5-580M processors for $130 and $230 premiums, respectively, as well as ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics for a mere $100. Last but not least, the EB and EC can trade in their weak 1366 x 768 displays for 1920 x 1080 full HD panels nearly worthy of Paul Miller's enthusiasm, and until October 9th that particular $50 upgrade costs you the very reasonable price of free.Sony updates VAIO F, E, and L with shiny new silicon, a pinch of Blu-ray and some denser screens originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 26 Sep 2010 21:31:00 EDT. Cisco, Skype Merger Could Improve Enterprise and Consumer VOIP, Video

News Analysis: After its Aug. 6 IPO filing, Skype has a couple of months to decide whether to go ahead with a public offering or to opt for an eBay part deux by falling into the arms of another large acquirer. Right now, the most likely buyer is Cisco Systems. It's not clear whether Cisco will end up opting to pony up billions of dollars to purchase Skype, but few technology companies would be better suited to take Skype to the next level. Skype could be a natural extension to many existing products within the Cisco portfolio and could be a vital cog to help deliver VOIP (voice over IP), instant messaging chats and multiparty video calling to even more places and more devices. eWEEK Labs combed through the networking giant's array of products and services aimed toward the home, the office and the data center to identify possible points of synergy where Cisco could better deliver these services to consumers and enterprise employees alike. Meanwhile, Cisco could capitalize on opportunities to integrate and interoperate with redundant internal solutions to help extend the walls of Skype's garden to greener pastures. - ...

Panasonic's hair-washing robot: rinse, kill, repeat

If Panasonic can build an exercise horse then surely a robot that washes your hair should come as no surprise. Imagine being lifted from your robotic bed by a plush care-assist robot and placed into a chair for an automatic shampoo and scalp massage. That is the future of care for the elderly and sick in Japan, or the rich and lazy everywhere else. Panasonic's hair-washing robot scans each human head three-dimensionally to apply just the right amount of pressure during the shampoo, massage, and rinse phases. It recognizes repeat customers and then applies that person's preferred massage course using its human-like sixteen "fingers." Each arm contains a trio of motors to power swing, press, and massage motions... or to snap your spinal column should you decide to sass.Continue reading Panasonic's hair-washing robot: rinse, kill, repeatPanasonic's hair-washing robot: rinse, kill, repeat originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 07:53:00 EDT. RealD to license ZScreen for HDTVs, bring cheap 3D glasses to the masses

Most who have seen their favorite content in 3D have seen the light, but still find it hard to look past the glasses. Any 3D glasses are worse than no glasses at all, but expensive 3D glasses make even less sense to most. So while all the consumer 3DTV glasses so far have been of the expensive active shutter variety (which keeps the price of the TVs more in line with the 2D versions), RealD announced at the 3D entertainment summit that it would license its ZScreen technology (pictured above) to 3DTV manufacturers. This means that the same inexpensive 3D glasses used in theaters could be used at home. The big question of course is how much will these 3DTVs cost, and how will the 3D quality experience compare to what active shutter glasses can offer. But to those who hate heavy, expensive 3D glasses that require batteries, this is could certainly be good news.RealD to license ZScreen for HDTVs, bring cheap 3D glasses to the masses originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 11:40:00 EDT. HTC HD7 schematic illustrates our Windows Phone 7 future

First thing's first: there's no way to verify that the above image is a legitimate HTC doc. The tipster seems reliable, having provided WMPoweruser with the HTC Mozart video yesterday, but until we witness Peter Chou holding the damn thing up in front of an audience struggling to get a WiFi signal, we'll remain cautious. Anyhow, what we're looking at above is the claimed first visual of that ephemeral HD7 from HTC, replete with a dedicated camera button and what looks like a dual-LED flash, along with a MicroUSB data/power port and headphone jack at the bottom (identical to the HD2 and Desire HD). It's reassuring to see much of the glorious HD2 heritage being carried over into this successor atop HTC's Windows phone line, though if you're not all that keen on jumping on what looks like yet another superpowered 4.3-inch slate, there's always the rumored Trophy handset as well.HTC HD7 schematic illustrates our Windows Phone 7 future originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 03:39:00 EDT. Microsoft's Arc Touch Mouse Lurking Around Web

With all the recent excitement over touch screens, it's sometimes easy to overlook that the mouse remains essentially unchanged from Ye Olden Days of the Reagan era. Sure, they've gotten more ergonomically inclined, with new inputs such as scroll wheels and third buttons; but a time-traveler from the 1980s would have no trouble recognizing and using one.The mouse's current evolution, it seems, centers on making it more touch-centric than ever. Look at Apple's Magic Mouse, with a multitouch surface that allows for scrolls, swipes and zooms. Then there's Microsoft's Arc Touch Mouse, images of which recently appeared on a German shopping Website. Microsoft's not making anything official, but if the rumors prove true, the mouse includes some features that would give Sonny Crockett a severe case of future shock: touch-scrolling, a 2.4GHz nano transceiver and the ability to flatten its regular arched shape for easier transport. The mouse's page on that German Website has already been taken down, but Engadget managed to snatch some screenshots ahead of the deletion. Slashgear's also posted a supposed marketing image, which has the Arc Touch Mouse looking like a black plastic inchworm.Rumors peg the mouse's price at $69.95, and its release date sometime during the fall (soon, in any case). Personally, aside from the coolness factor, I don't see the point of a mouse that can alternatively curve or flatten--I know some people would rather use a mouse with their laptops, and carry one along on trips; but I didn't figure enough of them out there to justify that sort of engineering decision. In any case, it's a differentiator.Given how that silver strip bifurcates the top of the mouse into two black "tabs," I'm guessing this is a two-button mouse in the tradition of previous Microsoft offerings. Does a finger-swipe on that strip activate the touch scrolling? I'm thinking maybe; it's certainly positioned in the same place as a traditional scroll wheel. I'm curious about whether this follows in the steps of the Magic Mouse, with a multitouch surface, or if we're dealing with old-fashioned mechanical buttons.Either way, Microsoft will likely make an announcement soon. For your viewing pleasure, here's one of the snatched box shots that's been drifting around the Interwebs:

MetroPCS launches LTE network in Las Vegas, Samsung Craft along for the ride

MetroPCS was quite serious when it said it wanted to have commercial LTE up and running in 2010 -- and indeed, it has made good on its word today with an official launch in Vegas. Of course, you need hardware to go along with a new network, and that's not much of a surprise either: the long-discussed Samsung Craft becomes not just MetroPCS' first 4G handset, but the first LTE phone to launch commercially anywhere in the world. It's not a smartphone, but it's got a 3.3-inch AMOLED display, 3.2 megapixel camera, and a full QWERTY slide. Interestingly, MetroPCS is not offering tethering (or any modems) at this time, which means the only way you're going to be able to enjoy those blazing speeds is on the handset itself. The carrier is offering basic unlimited service for $55 for a month, while another $5 will net you unlimited on-demand video streaming from 14 networks. The Craft, meanwhile, runs $299 contract-free -- and since it's dual-mode, it'll work just fine on MetroPCS' CDMA network once you leave the blackjack tables. Follow the break for Samsung's press release.Continue reading MetroPCS launches LTE network in Las Vegas, Samsung Craft along for the rideMetroPCS launches LTE network in Las Vegas, Samsung Craft along for the ride originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 10:51:00 EDT. Sony 'Advanced Model' (Alpha A77?) DSLR emerges at Photokina, E-mount firmware coming soon

We've heard Sony use the term "Advanced Model" when dealing with concepts before, and it seems that it's using said code once more to disguise what may end up being the A77. Rumors have been flaring over the past few weeks, noting that this particular Alpha DSLR would be showcased at Photokina before being officially unveiled at CES 2011. Few details were given, but we're able to tell that it'll shoot HD video in AVCHD and will be compatible with a vertical grip. Moreover, it'll ship with a translucent mirror (as found in the A55 and A33) and an Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor. At the company's Photokina press conference, an executive noted that the cam will be "far more powerful than the a55," and that it'll be aimed at "serious enthusiast photographers."

A slew of concept / prototype lenses were also encased (including a comically large 500mm f/4 cannon) at Sony's booth, not to mention a few that'll definitely be available from 2011 and 2012. Back at the presser, we were informed that a grand total of ten A-mount (Alpha DSLR compatible) lenses will be on sale by 2012, and it's also considering working with a number of partners in order to develop third-party E-mount lenses for the NEX range. Moreover, a firmware update is slated for mid-October to bring autofocus support to A-mount lenses used on E-mount cameras, aperture control in video mode and customizable keys, while the NEX-VG10 Handycam will see an A-mount lens firmware update in November. Speaking of E-mount cameras, Sony's also developing its own micro flash for use in low(er)-light situations, and considering that it recently grabbed a full 50 percent of the mirrorless market share in Europe, we'd guess it's nowhere near slowing down on the innovation. Nokia World 2010: Smartphones, Software, Developers and New Faces

Nokia opened its Nokia World 2010 conference in London on Sept. 14, proclaiming the company is back in the game with new phones and a new attitude. The cell phone giant also held its Nokia Developer Summit at the same time as Nokia World. At the developer event, Nokia announced enhancements to the Nokia Qt software development kit (SDK), improvements in the Ovi Store, and lowering the barrier to entry and increased monetization opportunities for developers. Along with four new phones, Nokia announced new IT services and strategies. The show also saw some new faces join Nokia, while other older ones announced plans to leave. Moreover, Nokia officials said the company is ideally placed to capture much of the projected growth in the global marketplace and that the company intends to maintain its leadership in voice and data for the masses. With that in mind, Nokia ushered Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the World Wide Web, in to discuss the issues of the digital divide and how to continue to work to bridge it. Nokia did its part by introducing a new lower-cost feature phone with advanced capabilities, the Nokia C3 Touch and Type. BlackBerry Storm3 caught on camera?

Theoretically, we think this could just be a really well-executed Photoshop mashup, but considering how good RIM is at keeping industrial design elements consistent from device to device, we tend to believe this alleged shot of a BlackBerry Storm3 in the wild. Specs are said to include a 3.7-inch display -- up significantly from the Storm2's 3.2-inch example and better suited to take on 2010's top-tier touchphones -- along with 8GB of onboard storage. We'd also heard in the past that the Storm3 would be slated for BlackBerry 6, a 5 megapixel cam, and a late-2010 launch on Verizon, and the new rumor of integrated mobile hotspot functionality would corroborate that a bit since Big Red's really pushing that feature as a plan add-on these days. Boil Buoy ?Floats in the Pot, Rings When it?s Hot?

Quirky’s Boil Buoy is a floating chime that lets you know when a pot of water boils. It also has a pun in the name which only really works if you speak English with an English accent.
“Buoy” is pronounced that same as “boy” on my side of the pond, instead of “boo-ey” in the US, [...]

PlayStation Move gets broken down -- so easy, an end-user could do it

Another week, another well-detailed tear down from the kids at iFixit. Blessed with an eight out of ten on the repairability index, the PlayStation Move was said to be one of the easiest devices yet to break down and reassemble, so there's a good chance that any novice DIYer with a steady hand and a Phillips screwdriver could accomplish what's shown in the link below. No huge surprises were found once the PCB's clothing was removed, but we were told that the Move controller contains a great many components that are found in today's modern smartphones: a processor, accelerometer, gyroscope, Bluetooth transmitter, vibrating motor, and even a MEMS compass. The sphere at the top can flash any color thanks to the included LEDs, and the integrated Li-ion battery can be disconnected (and thus, replaced) from the device without any soldering. Hit the source for the nitty-gritty, and hop on past the break for the highlights. Oh, and as a reminder, you can grab your own Move starting today if you call North America home.Continue reading PlayStation Move gets broken down -- so easy, an end-user could do itPlayStation Move gets broken down -- so easy, an end-user could do it originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 19 Sep 2010 22:55:00 EDT.
